As far as dividing the American public, there are few topics which could do the trick like the phrase “Hillary Clinton’s Emails”.
Like a phoenix they rose again and again from the ashes of the 24 hour news cycle, stalking Clinton for a year and a half before eventually hounding her into her political grave. And yes, it really was that dramatic.
Trump seized it for the perfect rallying point it was and lead his supporters in cries of “Lock her up!” promising to appoint a special prosecutor to deal with Clinton. And it was an equally large problem in the democratic ranks. For many, the emails were the straw that broke the camel’s back and Clinton lost supporters to Bernie Sanders during the primaries and to Donald Trump in the general. By the end most Americans where just tired of hearing about it (as demonstrated in this SNL skit).
But what has happened since the election? The answer to that is a lot of the same and nothing much.
In early January, Fox News reported on some new emails which had been posted on the State Department website and revealed that passwords and agendas were often passed over email. On February 21st Clinton’s former campaign chairman, John Podesta, claimed that the FBI reopening the case 11 days before the election had lost Clinton the presidency.
So, a lot of the same.
But despite repeated campaign claims to appoint a special prosecutor and convict Clinton, Donald Trump has not pursued her since taking the office in January. During his first post-election interview with 60 Minutes Trump said he wanted to focus on other things like jobs and healthcare and that he didn’t want to hurt Bill and Hillary Clinton, calling them “good people”. And the media has at long last let go of the bone. It’s been months since the words “Hillary” and “Emails” made the headlines.
So, nothing much.
So what was it all for? A topic which divided our nation, which swung the election, enraging Republicans and disgusting Democrats. And now it’s over. And forgotten.
